AIRBNB- Auckland
Piha Retreat - Rainforest Magic
About this space
The Retreat is nestled in protected native rain forest with stunning views down to Lion Rock at Piha Beach 15 mins drive away. You will be rested & rejuvenated after your stay. Designed by Chris Tate, who won international acclaim for his "Glasshouse" in Titirangi. Watch the sun go down from the deck with a glass of wine, enjoy the outdoor bath under the stars, then have a wonderful peaceful sleep.
The space
Architecturally designed perfect getaway location. We have repeat guests from Auckland who love the short car trip to get here, and guests from around the globe - all love staying in our magical protected forest. The Waitakere Ranges are the rain forest catchment area for Auckland and most of the Ranges are protected. Our 7 acres of forest is also protected under the Queen Elizabeth II Trust - so this land can be protected for present and future generations. A quirky design "feature" has the kitchen sink on the outside deck. The open plan living room has an enclosed fireplace (for use of winter months), small tv with freeview & dvd player. There is a heat pump in the lounge and electric blankets on both beds. And everyone loves the outside bath! A Weber BBQ is on the front deck (if you haven't used a Webber before you always cook with the lid down - the food is delicious!). As we are part of the Waitakere Ranges we are on tank water so supply may be limited in summer months. The very occasional power outages in the area means that no water will be available during any outage because of the electric pump - this doesn't happen often.
There are 7 acres of tracks that lead to a waterfall and slide (we call it the dam), and lots of other tracks. There is a lot of wildlife at night outside. You may like to bring torches.
A request from us - when you send your booking request please include some details about your group e.g. who they are and what they do - this is very special family land and we like to have a little information about our guests. Thank you.
Other things to note
The Retreat is self catering. There is a small Breville bench-top oven - called a "smart oven", an electric frypan, small slow cooker, rice cooker, 2 solid elements, pots and pans + the Webber BBQ (out on the front deck).
We provide:
Filtered drinking water
Tea/coffee/sugar
Salt/pepper/cooking oil
Firewood (provided over winter months only)
The closest shops are in Titirangi (15 mins drive) so we suggest you purchase your provisions on the way. Parts of this area of Auckland are "dry" which means many places do not sell alcohol. If this is important remember to get your provisions near to your home or shop near Auckland Airport where there are supermarkets & other shops. The drive from Auckland Airport takes 45 mins - 1 hour in light traffic. We recommend you arrive in daylight hours when possible.
Hosted by Jane (By Jane)
I live a 9 hour drive away from The Retreat in the capital city - Wellington with my partner Richard. Richard's passion is "fixing" people and I love planning and organising so running 2 health clinics and a massage training school makes the most of both our skills sets. I love visiting our family land - these days many people do not have somewhere to go that means "family" and this unique property has been in our family since 1924. In 2010 the new house - The Retreat - was completed on the one clear piece of land in the entire property. A project by my sister & I, she found Chris Tate, and a long process of building something very special to share was started. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
